Mallory

“I really need to meet this guy, Mallory,” my dad insists. “You can’t just be taking off to parts unknown with some dude who just asked you to go.”

“Dad,” I chuckle into the phone as I’m rushing around my apartment. Packing on such short notice is proving to be really challenging. I don’t know what to take with me. I don’t want to overpack, but I don’t want to have to do laundry every day either.

“Well, how can you expect for me to be okay with this?” my father insists.

“I trust Bran,” I repeat to him something that I’ve been telling him for the last month. We go through this every single time I call my parents to let them know that I’m flying to New York to see my hockey playing boyfriend.

Thinking of Bran as my boyfriend is putting a giant smile on my face. Our relationship is still so new, and the fact that we don’t see each other as often as we’d like is definitely keeping the spark alive.

The smile on my face fades for a quick second. I wonder if spending ten days with Bran will be a mistake. I don’t want to lose what we’re building. I don’t want him to realize that having me around day in and day out like that is not really what he wants, no matter what he tells me now.

“How can you trust someone you barely know, Mal?” Dad continues his tirade. “This is crazy, and you know it.”

“Dad,” I sigh, “how is this different than me dating someone from around here?”

“He’d be local,” he yells in frustration. “We could meet his family, see what they’re about.”

“I’m not about to date his family though,” I protest. “This is crazy.”

There’s a long moment of silence on the line, and I know that whatever I said must’ve offended him.

“Mallory,” he finally tells me, his tone much softer now, and also disappointed. “If you don’t understand how important it is for your partner’s family to be involved and supportive, then we didn’t raise you right.”

“Dad,” I try to laugh and make light of this, but it falls flat. “I love you and mom, and our family. I didn’t mean to imply you wouldn’t be important in any relationship I had.”

“His family is just as important,” he insists. “Who are they? What do they do? Are they okay with him flying you all over the damn country just to see you for two or three days at a time?”

Bran has not been forthcoming with information on his family, so I don’t have an answer to any of the questions my dad has for me. On that night when we first met, I remember his teammate’s girlfriend, Chloe, mentioning that Bran doesn’t ever use his game passes for family, that they don’t like hockey. But that is all I have.

“I’m not even so sure about these hockey players,” dad continues. “Your friend’s brother doesn’t give me any warm and fuzzy feelings, never has.”
